What is bargaining ?
Bargaining is nothing but a Mistrust and exists because you have probably been ripped or cheated in past. Sounds Simple! Unfortunately this culture does not stop at shops or while there is a purchase.
Our bargaining starts early in the day as we wake up and open the door to take milk from the Doodhwala, “Bhaiya! Doodh kam, paani jayada de rahe ho, your milk is not worth the price” and with this we begin our day or rather our bargaining or even better our mistrust.
From rickshaw wala to car dealers, from vegetable vendors to airline tickets from domestic servants to professional services, we bargain for everything. Have we got habitual to bargaining or have we got habitual to mistrust ?
I felt I was a killer at bargaining till I happened to witness tourists bargaining with our vendors, selling Gujrati handicraft items at Cannought Place or selling jute bags at Lajpat Nagar market or even selling mobile covers at Gaffar market. These tourists ripped off the vendors with their slightest profit and claimed in the “Tour to India” guide that Indians cheat ,one must bargain shamelessly.
Where has this culture seeped in from and how has it gone so deep rooted that we feel it is our right… to bargain ,to mistrust. Even a poor rickshawwala who asks for 15rs to ferry you in scorching summer heat is bargained for mere 2rs.we have started to mistrust his efforts into the output.
200 drops of sweat = 15 Rs !!!
It seems now bargaining has taken a very serious turn and this culture has also come in other aspects of life too.
A women who reports her molestation in police station for her FIR is bargained to let go, She is bargained in her trial.
A family’s entire life savings go in buying a dream house with their perfect likings but are cheated by the builders. They report and the RERA court who bargains to adjust in another accommodation.
And more..
Has mistrust lead to bargaining, or bargaining to mistrust, is something to ponder upon.
Is this suspicion over trust?
Have we lost complete faith in all or is it that we don’t take anything at the face value?
We need to work on trusting, regaining faith but again How !!
