What defines smartness ? So many terms that we hear in everyday lingo, smart casuals, smart evening wear but never heart smart ethnic. Taking my reference for this article from the recent hullabaloo about a saree clad lady not being allowed inside a restaurant in the National Capital comes as a rethink at to in which category is the much loved “Saree” classified ?
I remember having read the news article in which the team member said that they had in past allowed guests in Casuals but never in Saree. Does that mean Saree is not casual wear ?
What about those millions of Indian women who for ages have been cladding these and even 9vari ( Maharashtra special ) working in fields, homes and offices. Are you telling me that they got decked, decked and dolled to work in a fish market or when they worked in bank or at home or at school.
We need to understand the term Smart Casuals first ! “It is a somewhat ambiguous dress code that calls for polished yet relaxed attire”
And from the above dictionary meaning which part does not let Saree qualify ?
For me the attitude, the character, the intelligence, the knowledge, the ability is the key essence of a collective name called smartness, not my clothes. I do agree that clothes help to put that smartness across even more firmly and especially when it gives the first impression.
We are almost on the verge of extinction of this beautiful attire in the cities. India, Indians should promote this Saree and not the other way round. We need go beyond such stereotypes of Saree is the attire of uncool people .. or as they want to call unsmart.
The only time I feel confident and beautiful together is when I don a saree. It’s graceful, comfortable, beautiful.
So here’s 3 cheers to the Saree ladies. Open your wardrobes, bring it out, bring it on, without giving a second thought to such bogus claims
