Impact of 9 Min on 5th April on Power Grid

By Rajiv Goyal

As Hon’ble Prime Minister of India appealed to the nation to switch of lights in their houses on 5th April Sunday at 9 pm for 9 min, a move to lend a psychological support to administration, health workers and those who are in stress, the entire professionals of power sector have activated to discuss the strategy to protect power grid.

It is expected that approx 10-12000 MW of power demand will vanish in one time block of 15 Min. The demand will start reducing from 8.50 pm and complete demand will come latest by 9.20 pm. Since most of power will be from thermal generators, ramp down and ramp up so fast is a difficult task. Strategy is necessary to be in place for which only 24 hrs are available. India had earlier faced such a situation during Solar eclipse when huge solar power generation vanished for 15-20 min, so we have the capabilities for sure. Experts are studying the profile of this block, for which historical data is not much available. Few senior officers are also thinking graded response both on supply side and on demand side.
