Noida (19/08/2024): Traveling abroad often reveals intriguing contrasts and inspirations. Recently, while exploring children’s play areas in countries like the Netherlands and the UK, I was struck by the beautiful wooden swings and slides that adorned these spaces. These wooden structures not only enhance the aesthetic beauty of the parks but also serve as a gentle reminder of the colorful BUT plastic playground equipment we commonly see back home in India.

As India grapples with the global challenge of reducing plastic use, it’s essential to recognize that efforts to eliminate plastic must extend beyond the smaller items like straws and cutlery. The need to reimagine larger, more impactful elements of our daily lives—like children’s playgrounds which offer an excellent alternative to plastic. They are not only visually appealing, but also inspire creativity and imagination in children while promoting a healthier environment.

These playgrounds possess a timeless charm. They blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, fostering a deeper connection with the environment. Beyond aesthetics, these playgrounds offer children a more tactile and imaginative play experience. Wooden structures can be customized and creatively designed, providing diverse and engaging play opportunities that are less rigid than their plastic counterparts.

In terms of durability, the argument often arises that wooden structures may not withstand harsh weather conditions as well as plastic. However, the experiences of countries like the Netherlands and the UK, which experience substantial rainfall, show that with proper treatment and maintenance, wooden playgrounds can endure for years. If these countries can sustain wooden play areas, India, with its diverse climate, can certainly adopt similar practices.

As we celebrate Independence Day, it is crucial to reflect on how we can contribute to a more sustainable future for our nation. Small actions, such as using wooden toothbrushes or opting for reusable cutlery, contribute significantly to this effort. Interestingly, many coffee shops in these countries even offer discounts for customers who bring their reusable cups—a simple yet effective incentive for sustainable practices.

In India, movements like “bartan bhandaar” (community cutlery banks) have already started paving the way towards sustainability. However, the need of the hour is to go beyond participation and actively innovate. Our nation’s rich resources and heritage of craftsmanship can be harnessed to create sustainable solutions that not only reduce waste but also generate employment and preserve traditional skills.

On this Independence Day, let us pledge to think beyond the obvious and address the larger picture of environmental conservation. By choosing wooden playgrounds over plastic, supporting initiatives that promote sustainable living, and innovating within our capacities, we can make a profound impact on our environment.

Let’s aim to be a nation that not only follows global trends in sustainability but also sets new standards for the world to emulate. Our actions today will shape the legacy we leave for future generations—a legacy of respect for nature and a commitment to preserving the beauty and health of our planet.

Together, let’s be the change we wish to see, starting with our own communities and extending to the farthest corners of our nation. Every step counts, and every effort brings us closer to a greener, cleaner India.
